Travel Date: Thursday, July 1
The following day we were up bright and early to head to Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota. To get there from our campground, we had to follow a "road" that wound back and forth in stomach-wrenching, nearly unnavigable directions. Once we arrived, we were greeted by a large walkway surrounded by each state's flag that led to the massive sculptures. Despite our best efforts to persuade the local park authority, we were not granted access to the top of the mountain to reenact the climax of North By Northwest.
After another night of camping and honing our skills of pitching a tent in total darkness, it was off to Devil's Tower to continue our pseudo trip through classic Hollywood (Close Encounters, anyone?). Due to some unusual subterranean volcanic activity, followed by thousands of years of intense erosion, the hulking igneous protrusion now stands alone in the middle of Hulett, Wyoming, revered by local Indian tribes, mountain climbers and tourists alike.
Much love,
The Walrus & The Carpenter.
Oh, I know you have no problem pitching a tent...tehehe :) LOL!
